During your regular exam, Dr. Smith visually examines the soft tissues of your mouth, including your tongue, cheeks, gums, and throat, and feels for any unusual lumps or irregularities. This screening is included as a standard part of your routine cleaning and exam appointment, so it requires no extra scheduling or preparation on your part.
In addition to your regular screenings, we recommend checking your own mouth for symptoms about once a month. Signs to watch for include:
- A sore or ulcer that does not heal within two weeks
- A red or white patch on the gums, tongue, or lining of the mouth
- A lump or thickening in the cheek or neck
- Persistent difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw or tongue
- Numbness in any area of the mouth or face
