A dental crown can restore the strength, function, and appearance of a tooth that has been weakened by decay, a large filling, or a root canal. At Holladay Smiles, Dr. Michael T. Smith uses CEREC same-day technology to design, mill, and place many crowns in a single visit, without a temporary crown or a second appointment.
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. Crowns are commonly recommended after a root canal, for a tooth with a large or failing filling, or to protect a cracked or heavily worn tooth, and can also complete a dental implant or anchor one end of a dental bridge. During your exam, Dr. Smith will let you know whether a crown, a smaller restoration like an inlay or onlay, or another treatment best fits your tooth.
- Protects the tooth: A crown covers and reinforces a weakened tooth against further damage.
- Restores function: A crown lets you bite and chew normally on a tooth that could not otherwise handle that pressure.
- Natural appearance: Crowns are shaded and shaped to blend in with your smile.
- Efficient treatment: With CEREC, many crowns are completed in one visit instead of two.
With CEREC, Dr. Smith takes a digital scan of your tooth instead of a traditional impression, designs your crown on-screen, and mills it from a solid ceramic block in our office while you wait, often eliminating the need for a temporary crown and a return visit.
